The Chieftains' Paddy Moloney Celebrates 57-Year Legacy, Constant Renewal Of Irish Music

thechieftains.com

The Chieftains are one of Ireland's greatest cultural exports, having earned a unique status as roving ambassadors of the traditional music of Ireland. Paddy Moloney formed the folk band in 1962, inspired by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. By touring frequently and recording over 50 albums that featured a wide variety of guests, The Chieftains succeeded in bringing a spirit of sharing and kinship for all musicians to the global music scene.

In an interview with Cara Lieurance, the 80-year-old bandleader, Uillean piper and whistle player Paddy Moloney talks about what to expect at their concert on March 1 at Miller Auditorium. He also higlights a few of the surprising turns his journey with the Chieftains has taken, such as seeing their instruments taken to space on a NASA voyage, and learning about a female Japanese tribute group called "The Lady Chieftains."
