(MPRN) - Opponents of wolf hunting in Michigan have filed a legal challenge to a state law that bypassed two voter referendums in the question.
Voters rejected two separate wolf hunting laws adopted by the legislature but lawmakers approved a third law put before them through a petition drive. The Keep Michigan Wolves Protected lawsuit says that law violates the state constitution because it covers too many subjects. Besides setting wolf hunting rules, it also created up a million-dollar fund to fight invasive species, and money to provide free hunting and fishing licenses to veterans.
Federal wildlife officials recently returned the gray wolf to the endangered species list, a move that stops future wolf hunts. Keep Michigan Wolves Protected says the lawsuit is necessary in case Congress takes wolves off the endangered list again.
