A new audit shows Michigan has failed to secure personal data collected as part of several federally-funded programs. That includes the software used by Michigan's child welfare system.
Lauren Leeds is with the state budget office. She says the state has been working hard to protect electronic data in recent years.
“That’s an area where we’re definitely focusing and trying to make improvements on. So the state is working to make its IT more secure," she says.
The audit did not find any examples of personal information being compromised. In the case of the child welfare system – it said some state workers could have accessed some information inappropriately.
