Southwest Michigan Today For Thursday November 30, 2017

The state is hiring two people to oversee Enbridge Energy's study of a controversial oil and gas pipeline. WMU's Darius Phillips is the MAC special teams player of the year. The K-Wings get a win on the road.

The state of Michigan this week is hiring two people to oversee studies regarding the viability of the controversial Line 5 oil pipeline. The studies, conducted by Enbridge Energy, are intended to improve safety and prevent oil spills along Line 5. On WDET’s Detroit Today, Michigan Pipeline Safety Advisory Board co-chair Valerie Brader says the state doesn’t trust Enbridge. The agreement requires Enbridge to replace a section of the pipeline that runs under the Saint Clair River with a tunnel. A similar tunnel could be built under the Straits of Mackinac depending on the outcome of pipeline studies.

Western Michigan University senior Darius Phillips has been named the Mid-American Conference’s Special Teams Player of the year. Phillips was also named all-MAC first team kick return specialist and defensive back. Another 11 Broncos were all-MAC conference selections. Western finished 6-6, and will wait to find out this weekend if they will be invited to a post season bowl game.

In hockey, Kalamazoo scored three goals in the third period in a 4-1 win at Kansas City. The K-Wings play the Mavericks on the road again Friday night.
