Battle Creek Schools enters an agreement with the Michigan Department of Education. Republican state lawmakers want to limit deed restrictions on public school buildings.

Battle Creek Public School officials have formally entered into a partnership agreement with the Michigan Department of Education designed to improve schools. The Battle Creek Enquirer says the agreement between Battle Creek schools and the state was signed yesterday. It includes technical assistance, financial support and help with staffing issues. The Battle Creek district is also working to improve early childhood education, after school programs and other services with the help of a 51-million dollar grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Republican state lawmakers are trying to make it harder for school districts to prevent old school buildings from being used for educational purposes. The bill is on its way to the governor. It's aimed at addressing issues being raised by a judge hearing a lawsuit brought by a charter operator in Detroit. The charter is fighting a deed restriction on a building the Detroit school district refuses to lift. (Michigan Radio
