Donations are being sought for people displaced by a fire at the Village Inn Apartments in Battle Creek. The United Way of the Greater Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region, says it’s working with other agencies to collect the types of things that may have been lost in the fire on July 22nd. Household items, such as bedding, towels, and kitchen utensils are being accepted by Charitable Union in Battle Creek. Household items and furniture can be donated to Goodwill Industries of Central Michigan’s Heartland and donations of Furniture and Appliances are being accepted at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Battle Creek.
(MPRN) The Michigan Supreme Court is days away from the end of its term – and there’s still some cases it needs to decide. The court has two big cases left to decide. It heard one during a special session almost two weeks ago. It will have to decide if a proposal to overhaul how the state draws its political district lines can go on the November ballot. The other involves a former Grand Rapids Police Department policy. Police officers would photograph and fingerprint people they detained who didn’t have IDs on them. The ACLU has challenged the policy saying it disproportionately affects African Americans. The department says it has scaled way back on photographing and fingerprinting – even though a court has yet to say the policy is unconstitutional.
(WDET) The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has approved a proposal from Detroit Grand Prix officials to continue the race on Belle Isle. The bid was first presented at a public meeting held early this month. DNR Parks and Recreation division chief Ron Olson says holding the race on Belle Isle benefits the island. Now the Belle Isle Advisory Committee will review the proposal for final approval. The committee will decide whether or not the race continues on Belle Isle following a public meeting on August 2nd to discuss the bid.
In baseball, Battle Creek rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to take the lead, then held on for a 7-6 win over Green Bay Sunday. The Bombers will begin a two game series at Lakeshore Monday night.
Kalamazoo lost to Madison Sunday 6-3. The Growlers will play their next four games at home. They begin a two game series with Wisconsin Monday night at Homer Stryker Field.
