Legislation could expand Michigan's ban on using a phone while driving. Northern Michigan University faces a lawsuit for gender discrimination. WMU opens the baseball season with three losses.
(MPRN) Lawmakers in Lansing could make it illegal for you to do anything with your phone while driving. Hands free driving legislation has been introduced in the state House. It’s already illegal to text while driving. But a new bill would make it illegal to use a mobile device at all while driving. The bill includes an exemption for people in certain types of autonomous vehicles. It’s waiting for a committee hearing.
(Interlochen Public Radio) A group of female professors at Northern Michigan University in Marquette are suing the school for gender discrimination. A lawyer representing the four women says the professors were paid anywhere from 10 to 40 percent less than their male co-workers… while working the same job. Last year a federal commission concluded the University was violating the Equal Pay Act and Gender Discrimination laws. The commission attempted a resolution… but negotiations failed. NMU denies there is any discrimination.
(MPRN) The state Department of Health and Human Services is gradually returning to its regular schedule for distributing food benefits. The department went off schedule when it released February’s benefits in mid-January. That was because the federal government told them to, due to the federal partial government shutdown at the time. Recipients will get their benefits early in March and April. The department will then return to its regular schedule in May.
