Two Republican Congressmen from West Michigan joined Democrats in voting for a resolution blocking President Trump from declaring a national emergency to fund a wall on the border with Mexico. Fred Upton and Justin Amash were among 13 Republicans voting for the resolution Tuesday. In a statement, Upton says that strengthening the nation’s borders is a necessity, but he says reprogramming funds without the approval of Congress is a violation of the Constitution. The Senate still has to vote on the resolution to block the emergency declaration. President Trump would likely veto the legislation if it passes both chambers. A two-thirds vote of the House and Senate would be needed to override a Presidential veto.
(WKAR) A bill that changes who will be able to take back property after a judge has ruled in tenant disputes passed out of the Michigan State Senate Tuesday. The bill would expand the list of people who are allowed to reclaim property for landlords after a judge has ordered the property to be restored. Under the bill, an officer of the court, local law enforcement, sheriff or deputy sheriff could restore possession of property after being directed by the court. The bill passed unanimously in the Senate and will now go to the House.
(Michigan Radio) Two men charged with murder in the 2012 fungal meningitis outbreak are in the Livingston County jail. Their preliminary hearing is next week. Barry Cadden and Glenn Chin face 11 charges of second-degree murder for their roles in creating the tainted steroid medications that killed 19 people in Michigan. A Massachusetts jury already convicted them on related charges, but cleared them of murder there. Both men face life in prison.
(WDET) Fiat Chrysler is ready to spend four and a half billion dollars in its Southeast Michigan plants. Officials say the investment would result in about 6,500 new jobs. Before Fiat Chrysler signs off on the Detroit portion of the investment the city must first acquire the land for FCA to build a new assembly complex around the current “Mack Avenue Engine” site. The agreement says city officials have 60 days to do so.
In men’s basketball, Western Michigan lost at Northern Illinois Tuesday night 70-65. Center Seth Dugan led the Broncos with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Western is 8-20 overall this season with a 2-13 record in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos will host Ball State Saturday afternoon.
