Several weeks of contention between churches and the Historic Preservation Commission came to a head at the Kalamazoo City Commission meeting on April 1.

"LANSING, MI - Proposed reforms to Michigan's historic districts law are being shelved for now. In a letter to constituents, the chairman of the Michigan House Local Government Committee announced "indefinite" suspension of consideration on H.B. 5232, which was on its sixth draft since being introduced in January." The Kalamazoo City Commission has weighed in on proposed changes to Michigan’s laws on historic districts. The city will send a letter to the bill’s primary House sponsor, Representative Chris Afendoulis. When it was introduced, many preservationists said the bill, HB 5232 would make it hard to start or keep a historic district. Some of the proposal’s most controversial ideas have since been removed.
