Battle Creek Symphony

Three top players of the Battle Creek Symphony will run through entertaining and virtuosic bits of Bizet, Bernstein, Poulenc, Handel and even a classic Nintendo theme in Saturday's season-opening concert. It's a free online event, starting at 7:30 pm. Principal horn Jessica Lombardo talks to Cara Lieurance about filming the concert at Battle Creek's First Presbyterian Church, and the fun chemistry she has with her colleagues Michael Gause, trumpet, and Austin Motley, trombone.

Hundreds of fall semester concerts have taken place at Western Michigan University, and there's just one more before the winter break. It's the annual A Brass Celebration of Christmas, featuring the Western Brass Quintet and 20 additional brass players and percussionists. Cara Lieurance spoke with Dr. Robert White, professor of trumpet, and graduate assistant trumpeter Michael Gause, about the new and familiar music for this concert, which is the traditional "Christmas card to the community."

The Western Winds is a combined faculty-student group at Western Michigan University, led by Dr. Scott Boerma, who brought along graduate students Michael Gause (trumpet) and Laura Diaz (bassoon) to talk to Cara Lieurance about a concert on November 1. The program featured the world premiere of a new work by WMU professor of jazz trumpet, Scott Cowan, called La Suite de las Noches Hispanicas.
