Gaping sinkhole closes road in Battle Creek

In a press release, city officials said the collapse occurred around 1 am, while city workers were wrapping up sewer repair.

The collapse has closed a portion of Riverside Drive, from Columbia Avenue to Territorial Road East.

Part of Riverside Drive in Battle Creek collapsed last night. A 25-by-20-foot sinkhole has closed a section of the road south of downtown.

No injuries were reported, though one car was damaged.

City officials say crews are working to create a bypass for the sewer under the road, with excavators assisting with repairs. They gave no timeline for reopening the road.
