'I Chose These Pieces On Personal Feeling:' Gilmore Young Artist Micah McLaurin

micahmclaurin.com

Micah McLaurin performs multiple times at the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival this week as a 2016 Gilmore Young Artist. A student at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, he talks to Cara Lieurance about his early musical experiences in Charleston, South Carolina. A number of overseas competitions and festivals broadened his horizons and contributed to his growth as an artist, he says.

McLaurin talks about his program of Mozart, Franck, and Liszt, saying, "I really just chose them on personal feeling." The immense technical difficulties of the works are something he had to put behind him, so he could focus on the musical meanings intended by the composers.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
