Former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Betty Weaver has died at the age of 74.

Weaver served for 16 years on the court as a Republican, but in later years engaged in frequent battles with other GOP justices over the court’s operations and what she said was excessive secrecy.

Weaver resigned from the court in the summer of 2010 to give then-Governor Jennifer Granholm the chance to name a Democrat to the Supreme Court. Weaver was from northern Michigan, where she served as a judge before winning a seat on the state Court of Appeals.
