Encore's October Issue: Cemeteries, More Arts, And WMed's New Dean

Lynn Houghton for Encore Magazine

Longtime contributor Lynn Houghton researched a series of interesting local cemeteries for the latest issue of Encore Magazine. She's one of the writers editor Marie Lee depends on to uncover new corners of Southwest Michigan, Lee tells Cara Lieurance as they go behind the stories in the latest issue.

This month's cover story is a profile of Paula Termuhlen, the new Dean of the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed). It's important for readers to understand the true impact of the school founded 10 years ago and recently gifted $300 million, says Lee. Much of the gift will go toward scholarships for Black, Latino and indigenous students. In the long-term their communities could see better medical care as a result.
