Touring 3rd Album At Age 20, Jazz Phenom Matthew Whitaker Is Next Gilmore Rising Star

courtesy of the artist

Sound is one of the senses Matthew Whitaker uses to navigate the world, and in him, that sense is refined to the nth degree. He has perfect pitch, is able to play back complex music heard once, and has mastered a century of styles at the age of 20.

He tells Cara Lieurance that his third album, Connections, released in September, was a project in which he wanted to share the stage with other solo artists he's connected with, like Jon Baptiste and Regina Carter. The Monterey Jazz Festival was where a number of the connections were made.

At 4 pm on Sunday, Oct 10, Matthew Whitaker and his quartet will perform an in-person show in the Dalton Center Recital Hall. Details at the Gilmore Piano Festival website

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
