Statehouse Speaker Jase Bolger has proposed a plan for how the state could raise badly needed road maintenance and repair funds.
Gongwer News Service reports that the greatest amount of money would come from sales and use taxes that are already in place. Bolger says those sources could yield $450 million for roads by next year.
Bolger would also replace the current per-gallon taxes on gas and diesel with a six percent wholesale tax on both. He says the change would be “revenue neutral” for gas but would raise about $50 million dollars from diesel sales.
