A workgroup has been formed at the state capitol to examine whether changes are needed in how retail property is assessed in Michigan.
The Gongwer News Service reports that Vicksburg Republican Dave Maturen is leading the group. Maturen, also owns a real estate appraisal firm.
The issue of tax assessments for so-called “big box” retailers has come under scrutiny recently. Critics say the stores get a lower assessment based on the so-called “dark store” theory. Local governments say that has cut into their tax base.
