Whiteford Wins Open State House Seat In Allegan County

(MPRN-Undated) The Michigan Legislature has three new members after special elections on Tuesday.

Republicans Gary Howell and Mary Whiteford won seats that formerly belonged to Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat. Those two lost their seats last year after a sex-and-cover-up scandal that has since resulted in criminal charges.

Democrat Dave LaGrand of Grand Rapids also won the seat that was left open by former state Rep. Brandon Dillon (D-Grand Rapids), who left to become chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.

There’s still one seat left open in the House after former Rep. Derek Miller (D-Warren) became Macomb County treasurer. The primary for that seat will be held next month.

And one seat will likely open soon in the state Senate. Sen. Virgil Smith (D-Detroit) has offered to step down as part of a pending plea deal. He faces felony assault and firearms charges.
