Organist Tom Fielding says both the renovation of St. Augustine Cathedral, where he is music director, and the COVID-19 pandemic both got in the way of consistent practicing last year.

Jennifer Pascual

Dr. Jennifer Pascual gave a solo organ recital on Friday, Nov 8 at First United Methodist Church as part of the Sacred Music At The Cathedral Series, hosted and curated by Thomas Fielding, organist at St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo.  In an interview with Cara Lieurance, Pascual talked about the responsibilities of her job at St. Patrick's Cathedral, which includes preparing organ and choral music for seven services a day. Fielding previews the upcoming concerts on the series.

Timothy Jansen, director of music and organist for St. Anthony of Padua Church in St. Louis, MO, visited with Cara Lieurance to preview his Sep 30 concert. Jansen and Tom Fielding, the founder of the Sacred Music at the Cathedral Series and organist at St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo, shared their thoughts about the works on the program and the unusual "above and beyond" requirements of being an organist.

With works like Haydn's Pieces for a Mechanical Clock, Arvo Pärt's Annum Per Annum, plus classics by Bach and Widor, the table is set for an organ lover's feast, tonight at 7 pm at St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo. The soloist is music director Tom Fielding, who established a free public concert series, called Sacred Music at the Cathedral, five years ago. Fielding talks to Cara Lieurance about the program and appreciates the Kalamazoo music community's rare level of music literacy.

Chad Boorsma

The Sacred Music at the Cathedral Series, held at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kalamazoo, will begin its new season tonight at 7 pm with a solo recital by organist Christopher Dekker. A PhD student in organ performance at Notre Dame University, Dekker's program will include works of Bach, Barber, and Franck. He and series director Tom Fielding talk with Cara Lieurance about tonight's program.
