WMU moving forward on partnership with Cooley Law School

WMUK

Western Michigan University is moving closer to an agreement with Thomas M. Cooley Law School. During their regular board meeting on Thursday, trustees authorized Western President John Dunn to move forward to try and reach an agreement for an affiliation plan with the law school. The resolution approved by the board says that Cooley will remain an independent, non-profit school. But will be called the Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

Dunn says an affiliation agreement still needs to be worked out. But he says such an agreement would allow for greater collaboration between the two institutions. Dunn says it will benefit students currently at Western and at Cooley.

In other board action on Thursday:

Students will pay more to live on campus beginning this fall. Trustees approved a 3.25% increase in room and board rates. Vice President for Student Affairs Diane Anderson says that allows the university to continue plans for new facilities and make improvements and renovations to existing buildings. She says they are also mindful of the cost to students and their families.

A new fee to pay for student media was approved  by trustees. Students will pay an additional $5 each semester to support the Western Herald, radio station WIDR and other student media. That brings the current student activity fee to $21 per semester and $10.50 for each summer session. The fee had been approved by students during elections in March. Trustees formally approved the fee during Thursday's board meeting.

University trustees approved a three-year contract with the Michigan Association of State Employees to cover workers at the university's power plant. The agreement covers 15 members. It includes a pay increase of 1% in July and 1.5% in January. Pay will continue to increase during the contract culminating with a 2% increase in July of 2015.
