Michigan Responds to Climate Change

Sehvilla Mann/WMUK

Michigan isn’t just cutting carbon emissions: It’s poised to be a climate change leader. That was the message at a panel discussion on climate change in Kalamazoo on Wednesday. Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell, League of Conservation Voters Deputy Director Jack Schmitt and Gail Parson of the group Environmental Entrepreneurs each spoke at the event, at the Boatyard Brewery on Patterson Street.

They addressed topics ranging from how cities can become more efficient, to the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rules to lower carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.

Schmitt says by next year, 10 percent of the state’s electricity will come from renewable sources. That’s thanks to a law the state passed in 2008.

WMUK’s Sehvilla Mann spoke with Schmitt about where climate protection efforts in Michigan go from here.

Sehvilla Mann joined WMUK’s news team in 2014 as a reporter on the local government and education beats. She covered those topics and more in eight years of reporting for the Station, before becoming news director in 2022.
