State Senator John Proos says  the state Legislature needs to create an environment that gives businesses the best chance to succeed.

Proos is running in the new 21st state Senate District that includes Saint Joseph, Cass and Berrien Counties. The Republican says being competitive for business is especially important for a district which borders Indiana.

On roads, Proos says the sales tax collected from sales of gasoline should go to roads. He says that should help determine how much more is needed to fix and repair roads.

Proos was a major supporter of bidding out the state's food service in prisons. Since then major problems have been reported with Aramark, the company awarded the contract. Proos says it was right to pursue savings on the contract. But he says if the company hired isn't working out, then the state should find someone else to provide the service.

The "right to work" legislation passed in 2012 is one of the things that Proos says helps improve Michigan's business climate. He says some employers would never consider Michigan without the change. But Proos did not name a specific business that has come to the state because of the "right to work" law.
