Two Soloists Discuss Their Concertos For KSO Concert

Nikki Statler

The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra's February 19th Symphonic Series concert featured, unusually, two 20th century concertos.  Concertos are an ever-popular form that pit a solo instrument with and against the forces of the orchestra.

Yukie Ota, the principal flutist of the KSO, played the Flute Concerto by Danish composer Carl Nielsen - appropriately, as she earned the silver medal in the 2014  Carl Nielsen International Flute Competition. Yaegy Park, who won the gold medal in the 2015 Stulberg International String Competition, played the Violin Concerto No. 1 by Sergei Prokofiev. Last May, she played Prokofiev in her prizewinning performance at the Stulberg, which is held annually in Kalamazoo. Before the concert, they visited WMUK to talk about their respective performances, and discuss the ins and outs of life as top-level musicians.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
