State Senate Leader "Hesitant" to End Film Credits

WMUK

(MPRN-Lansing) Legislation to end Michigan’s film incentive program could face a major obstacle in the state Senate. House Bill 4122 is moving quickly through the state House. But Senate Majority Leader ArlanMeekhof (R-West Olive) says he is not eager to take it up.

“The majority leader believes it’s important for us to remember that we have made a promise and entered into a contractual relationship in offering these credits,”

said Amber McCann, a spokesperson for Meekhof.

"We have to think about it beyond just whether or not we like the subsidy one way or another, but what is the impact of doing away with that subsidy? And what does it say about people who want to come do business with Michigan?”

Critics of the $50 million film credits say they don’t create enough jobs to justify their cost.
