Retired nurse Becky Sue Baldwin says The Affordable Care Act is far from perfect, but she says repealing “Obamacare” without a plan to replace it will cause big problems.

A rally and march to Save Health Care is being held Wednesday at Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo from 5:00 to 6:00p.m. Baldwin worked as a RN certified perianesthesia nurse at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. She is also member of the Michigan Nurses Association. Baldwin and Kalamazoo Vice Mayor Don Cooney joined WMUK’s Gordon Evans.

Baldwin says politicians are ignoring will of the people. She says health care is a human right, and there should be no profit motive in matters of life and death. Baldwin says that’s why the MNA supports Medicaid for All or a single payer health care system. Cooney says the latest poll shows support for providing health care for everyone. He says people need to take a stand, and demand better.

The Senate could vote this week on a version of the health care bill. Cooney says West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton holds a lot of responsibility for the current situation. He says the House version of the health care bill probably would not have passed without Upton’s support. Cooney says Upton should hold a public meeting to explain why he thinks this bill is worth passing.

Baldwin says the current health care system lacks fairness, and she fears rural communities would suffer under bills in the House and Senate, and that some rural hospitals having to close down. Cooney says the big message he hopes is sent from Wednesday’s rally is that health care is a human right and everybody deserves health care.
