The City of Kalamazoo will soon take advantage of a tool offered by the state to capture tax revenue needed for downtown improvements.
City commissioners unanimously approved the new Kalamazoo Downtown Economic Growth Authority, or DEGA, Monday night. It replaces the old Downtown Development Authority. Funding for the new agency won't affect individual taxpayers. City officials say current downtown tax revenue will be re-allocated instead.
The Kalamazoo Downtown Partnership, previously known as Downtown Kalamazoo Incorporated, says it will start working on the new project right away. More details could be announced in December.
