As the days grow shorter and the evening chill sets in, it’s the perfect time to slip on a cozy sweater and enjoy the magic of moonlit woods. Join us for this special “Nature at Night” experience at KNC, set along the beloved Habitat Haven Trail.

Fall trail conditions can be a little wild! Wear sturdy shoes and bring a walking stick or a trusty buddy to lean on if you have challenges on unstable surfaces or clear vision at night. This program will be canceled or postponed if there is extreme weather. A date will be announced if a cancellation occurs.

In February 1959, the front page of the Kalamazoo Gazette announced, “The city is to have a new art center,” with costs of construction paid by Mr. and Mrs. Donald S. Gilmore. In addition to their extraordinary philanthropy, the Gilmores were KIA board members, art collectors, and skilled artists. Mrs. Gilmore’s bequest to the KIA following her death in 1990 was 66 masterpieces from her personal collection, including works by Degas, Renoir, Rembrandt, Cassatt, and Matisse. During this ArtBreak, Dr. Jim Carter will explore the life of Genevieve Upjohn Gilmore and her final gift to the city she loved.

Jim Carter is a retired physician who had a clinical practice of Internal Medicine in Kalamazoo for 36 years. He received his M.D. from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and his Internal Medicine training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He has been involved with the KIA for over four decades as a photography student, board member, board president, and docent. As docent, he has led numerous tours for KIA visitors and presented a number of talks on a wide range of topics. His major area of interest is the intersection of art with medicine. Most recently, he wrote a comprehensive history of KIA for its centennial celebration.

Building on their previous programs Music of the Sun, The River and Song for Taos, they offer a ceremony full of original music, movement and wisdom. The Red Willow is a new program built around a work commissioned by Taos Chamber Music Society in the summer of 2023.

With their signature mastery, ETHEL and Mirabal weave a gorgeous tapestry with colors from Native America, Europe, Africa and Asia. At the pinnacle of the program is the central work – The Red Willow Suite – a breathtaking, ambitious piece of music and storytelling, not to be missed. The audience will feel the urge to dance and celebrate, as the space around their hearts grows and deepens.

Marcus Gradley's The House That Will Not Stand, blends poetic language with sharp, unexpected humour to tell the story of a Creole family facing a world in transition. This hauntingly beautiful play that captures the power, the magic, the tragedy of life in 1836 New Orleans. Here, Beatrice Albans, a widow navigating grief, memory, and the volatile terrain of change. Her three daughters live under her roof- but not always under her control. It is the story of resilient, resourceful, catty, joyful, spiritual women. Outside the house, the United States is tightening its grip on Louisiana, bringing new laws and new dangers for free Black families. Inside the house magic blends with harsh reality in this dynamic and relevant story.It's a story about legacy- how it's passed down, how it's resisted, and how is rewritten. About the ways women learn to hold power, to shape their own futures, and to speak aloud what was once only whispered.

Inspired by her family’s Sephardic roots in Greece and Macedonia, Sarah Aroeste has spent the last 15 years bringing her contemporary style of original and traditional Ladino music to audiences around the world.

Sarah writes and sings in Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish dialect originated from Spanish Jews after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. American born, she has worked tirelessly to keep Ladino music alive for a new generation. Her style, whether with her original music or with interpreting Ladino folk repertoire, combines traditional Mediterranean Sephardic sounds with contemporary influences such as rock, pop, electronica and jazz.

In the last decade, Sarah has amassed a large and loyal following across the United States and abroad, and she has been featured in both national and international press.
