Saugatuck Festival Returns With 'Epic Drama'

Martin Hogan

The 27th season of the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck returns Thursday and Friday with a program titled 'Epic Drama,' featuring string sextets by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Richard Strauss, music for string quartet by Puccini, and Camille Saint-Saëns Fantasie Op 124, for violin and harp.

Violinist Adam Liebert, a graduate of Western Michigan University and a member of the Grand Rapids Symphony, has performed for the last four festival seasons. He says the centerpiece of the program, Korngold's String Sextet, Op 10, has epic qualities both in the demands it makes of the performers and the heightened emotional and imaginative qualities of his music.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
