Beautiful Mozart, Big Dvorak And Brand-New Music Brings KSO Back To Concert Hall

Steve Riskind

The eminent American pianist Richard Goode will join the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 pm on Saturday, Oct 16 at Miller Auditorium in the first concert of the 2021-22 season. Music director Julian Kuerti and Goode joined Cara Lieurance to explore the program.

This is the first indoor, in-person concert the Kalamazoo Symphony has performed since the COVID-19 pandemic suspended all gatherings in March 2020 on the eve of its 100th anniversary. In 2020-21, the symphony produced an on-line virtual season, the KSO Canon Project, and a series of outdoor summer concerts at the Gilmore Car Museum. The 100th anniversary celebrations are continuing with some of 2020's original plans reinstated, including Richard Goode as the opening soloist of the season.

A conversation with Goode and Kuerti reveals deep fondness of Mozart's music. Kuerti shares an admiration of Goode as an artist whose playing is a bridge to an inherited tradition also possessed by his father, the concert pianist Anton Kuerti. Julian Kuerti also comments on a new 100th anniversary commission, Elizabeth Start's Traces, and the final work, Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 8.
