Gamrat: Defund Planned Parenthood in Michigan

An Allegan County state lawmaker wants to pull federal funding from Planned Parenthood in Michigan.

The Gongwer News Service says Rep. Cindy Gamrat (R-Plainwell) plans to introduce a bill to block funding for the agency. That follows a national controversy over fetal tissue research. But Planned Parenthood officials in Michigan say the real issue is the health services it provides.

Several other states have eliminated funding for the agency. But Democrats on Capitol Hill and President Obama say they're opposed to any nationwide "defunding" attempt.

According to Gongwer, Gamrat said on her Facebook page that the agency was "dismembering babies and harvesting their body parts." An anti-abortion group has released several covertly-recorded comments by Planned Parenthood officials outside of Michigan talking about the organization's role in fetal tissue research. The agency says the videos were heavily edited and took the comments out of context,
