As Schools Open Across State, Lawmakers Work to Reopen Highland Park High School

MPRN

(MPRN-Lansing) Tuesday marks the first time the city of Highland Park will not offer high school classes. The district’s emergency manager Don Weatherspoon closed the city’s only high school due to low enrollment. But state lawmakers who represent Highland Park say talks are underway to bring back a high school.

“We’re looking for a global competitive high school that will enhance and have an effective school system for those citizens over in Highland Park,”

said state Rep. LaTanya Garrett (D-Detroit).

“That will restore a school system that is functional and competitive and that will attract residents from other cities and around the state as a whole.”

Garrett says state officials need to make sure students have access to quality education.

“When we don’t invest in our youth, we ultimately set ourselves up to fail as a community and a state,”

she said. State Sen. Bert Johnson (D-Highland Park) in also working on the effort. The lawmakers hope to finalize a plan in the next couple of weeks. Their goal is to re-open a high school in Highland Park in time for next school year.
