State Senator Says State Should Cover Detroit Schools' Debt

MPRN

(MPRN-Lansing) A Democratic state lawmaker says it should be up to the state to cover the costs of a plan to rescue the Detroit Public Schools. And he says to make sure other districts don’t suffer as a result.

State Senator David Knezek says much of the district’s debts built up through the past six years when the Detroit schools have been controlled by state-appointed emergency managers. He says there is no perfect plan to fix a problem that will now cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

“That’s going to require compromise on both sides of the aisle. Not everyone is going to be happy.”

Knezek was appearing on the Michigan Public Television show Off the Record. He says the money could come from tobacco settlement funds or the state’s “rainy day” savings.

Legislation to address the Detroit school debts is expected to be rolled out in the coming week.
