Republican Lawmakers Urge Panel to Reject New Funding for Planned Parenthood

MPRN

(MPRN-Lansing) Almost 30 state House Republicans have signed a letter asking a state panel to reject a funding increase for Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan.

The Michigan Administrative Board is considering a $1.2 million increase in funding for the organization. The board’s Finance and Claims Committee is set to take up the item on Tuesday.

“It is the conscience of the House that tax dollars should not be spent for Planned Parenthood, the biggest provider of abortions in the country,”

said state Rep. Gary Glenn (R-Midland). Lawmakers approved language in the current fiscal year’s budget prohibiting state taxpayer dollars going to organizations that provide abortions.

“It clearly violates the spirit of the language we added to last year’s budget prohibiting the use of tax dollars for Planned Parenthood,”

said Glenn. But that language in the state budget only applies to state dollars.

This new funding is mostly federal dollars and revenue from Planned Parenthood patient fees and donations. State officials say the money would not be used for abortions.
