Orlando Hangs Over SCOTUS Marriage Anniversary

MPRN

(MPRN-Ann Arbor) Celebrations marked the one-year Sunday of the Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage in the United States.

April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, a pair of nurses from Hazel Park, were one of the couples whose challenge to same-sex marriage bans went to the Supreme Court. They were seeking the right to jointly adopt the special needs kids they’re raising together.

DeBoer says her joy at the anniversary is tempered by the shooting rampage at an Orlando-Florida gay nightclub earlier this month.

“A lot of fear now, a lot of fear of being who you are again because of what happened in Orlando.”

DeBoer says she’s concerned the couple’s children could become targets. She also says there are still gains that need to be made in housing and employment discrimination and acceptance that will avert more violence against LGBT people.
