The President of the National Low Income Housing Coalition hopes for a quick end to the shutdown of the federal government.
But Sheila Crowley says there is a huge, persistent problem of affordable housing in the United States. Crowley spoke with WMUK's Gordon Evans before an event at the Disability Network Southwest Michigan. She says in Michigan there is a shortage of 234,000 units in Michigan alone for people who are low income, elderly, disabled or otherwise in need of low income housing.
A new campaign called United for Homes has been launched to fund the National Housing Trust Fund. Crowley says the idea is to make changes to the mortgage interest deduction. She says some small changes could be made that would mostly effect wealthy people and raise money that could help end homelessness in the United States.
