Reaction to "Historic Ruling" in Kalamazoo

WMUK

The Executive Director of the Kalamazoo Gay Lesbian Resource Center says Friday’s Supreme Court ruling is historic, but not the last chapter in the battle in rights for LGBT people.

Jay Maddock says change in public opinion has come over time. He says that helped make the Supreme Court decision possible. But Maddock the momentum from today’s ruling should be used on issues such as discrimination against gay people in employment and housing.

Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell issued a statement welcoming the Supreme Court's ruling, saying he would be happy to officiate weddings for “residents of our community who have been denied this right for so long.”

The Bishop of the Diocese of Kalamazoo said the ruling raised serious concerns because it changes "the social fabric that has served as the very foundation of our society." In his statement, Bishop Paul Bradley says the church will continue to recognize marriage as between one man and one woman. But the Bishop said the position on marriage should not be confused with discrimination or intolerance.
