L'Italiana In Kalamazoo: Beatrice Rana To Play Gilmore Series

Neda Navaee

A 2013 Cliburn Competition silver medalist is the next soloist to appear on The Gilmore Rising Stars Series. Beatrice Rana hails from Lecce, Italy, a small southern town where her parents, and teacher Benedetto Lupo, guided her musical development.

Ms. Rana tells Cara Lieurance about her experiences in two major competitions: the 2011 Montreal International Musical Competition and the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.  Although her international career has been successfully launched in the last few years, she continues to live in Germany to study with AriVardi at the Hochschule fürMusik und Theater Hannover.

Ms. Rana will play works of Bach, Chopin, and Ravel in her program. Ravel's La valse, she says, is like wandering through an old castle, hearing distant music, until one finally discovers the ballroom filled with dancing aristocrats, dancing away their lives as society falls apart around them.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
