(MPRN-Lansing) Attorneys specializing in marijuana law now have their own division within the State Bar of Michigan.
The state Supreme Court and the Michigan Court of Appeals have had to rule on several cannabis issues since voters approved medical marijuana in 2008. The chair of the new division says it will make it easier to attorneys to keep track of Michigan’s complex and ever-evolving medical marijuana law.
“This way we can really keep track of trends and what’s going on in different aspects of the law,”
said Lapeer attorney Bernard Jocuns. Jocuns says he hopes it will also help more state-licensed patients and caregivers understand their rights and protections under the law.
“Those people that take the time and sit down with an attorney that’s competent in that area tend not to get in trouble,”
he said. Jocuns points out Michigan laws could soon change dramatically with multiple groups seeking to legalize marijuana in 2016. The only other state with a similar division for cannabis attorneys is Colorado – where recreational marijuana is legal.
