Michigan Senator Gary Peters says the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida is a multi-faceted problem that requires several approaches.
He says that includes tighter regulations on guns, and finding people who may have been radicalized. Peters says it also requires hate crime legislation since the shooting was an attack on a gay night club. Peters spoke with WMUK Thursday morning about the shooting in Orlando and pipeline safety legislation that recently passed Congress, and was sent to President Obama for his signature.
Several Senators, including Peters, spoke at length on the Senate floor on Wednesday, calling for votes on legislation related to guns. Peters says the two bills they want a vote on would prevent anyone on a terrorist “no-fly” list from purchasing a gun. He says the other could close loopholes that prevent background checks from being conducted for some gun purchases.
Peters says the pipeline safety bill will subject pipelines in the Great Lakes to the most stringent standards possible. Any pipeline in the Great Lakes can put the lakes at risk. He says the legislation also requires response plans that account for things like ice cover.
