Our popular Summer Glass Camps are back! With multiple options based on age, studio preference, time commitment, and price point – we have something for just about everyone. Students will learn the tools, equipment, and basic techniques of glass blowing, torch working, and/or kiln fusing as they work side-by-side with our talented artist instructors and also create collaboratively with their peers. Each student will create a number of projects, regardless of which Summer Glass Camp option they choose.

For the People, By the People brings works of historic significance into conversation with bold contemporary voices in an exploration of the symbols, struggles, and aspirations that have shaped and continue to inform American life. During this special extended Gallery Gathering, learn more with exhibition curator Rehema Barber, the KIA’s Director of Curatorial Affairs. Together we will discuss the key themes and guiding ideas that inspired this richly varied exhibition while taking a closer look at select artworks.

We all know there are artworks inside the KIA, but did you know there’s art outside too? Bring your little art lover to the museum in August when we’ll take a walk around the building and explore a few outdoor sculptures. Then we’ll check out some works inside the galleries by the same artists.

This is a beginner class for those who are interested in learning the basic skills to manipulate copper. Students begin by learning to deburr, clean and anneal copper. Basic hammer control introduces texturing. Design layout and chasing will add another skill level by introducing chisels and their unlimited uses. Students will also learn the technique of silver soldering and low relief. Finishing up with a patina finish will highlight the texturing and designs. Students will take home four class projects. These include a coupon, pencil caddie, vase and an eight-inch plate. The plate will be sunk in the center and highlighted with a low relief design.

Creative Corner
Flex those creative muscles and stop by the visitor center for some fun unstructured art time! We’ll have an assortment of mediums and crafts to play with, so it’s a great time to relax and get creative.

Prairie Power Guided Hike
Explore the wonders of a grassland sea! Prairies used to cover 240 million acres of our continent, but now these majestic ecosystems are few and far between. We’ll hike the mowed trails of Pitcher Prairie to see, smell and touch the plants and cool creatures who call this sun-swept landscape home.

Join the League of Women Voters and our partners, Mt Zion Baptist Church, NAACP Metropolitan Kalamazoo Branch, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Northside Ministerial Alliance, as we honor of the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Doors open at 4pm with supper followed by the main program at 5:00pm. From 5-6, we will watch a livestream of a 30-minute documentary, Three Marches, Two Sisters, One Bridge. It is about two sisters who marched at Selma as teenagers. They are the aunts of Charles Thomas Jr. of Southfield, a board member of the League of Women Voters of Michigan (LWVMI). Charles will talk with his aunts on the livestream after the film, asking them the questions frequently posed to them at screenings of the film. This event is free.
